Personal Profile

I was born in Hamilton and raised and educated in Burlington, where I still reside. I am married with one son who is a physician specializing in infectious diseases.
I graduated from McMaster University in 1968 with a BA and from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1971. I was called to the bar in 1973 and started my legal practice in 1973 as a partner in Craig, Haber and Matthews. In 1977, the firm changed to Craig and Matthews and carried on until 1990 when we merged with the Hamilton firm of Simpson Wigle. In the millennium year, I started my own practice in order to concentrate on the specific areas of interest to me. In 2000, I successfully passed the national examination for designation as a Certified Financial Planner.
In the past year, I let the designation of Financial Planner lapse in order to concentrate on my specific areas of practice. The financial planning knowledge that I gained over the years remains very useful in the planning of more complex Wills and estate administration.
Practice Areas

Nearly all of my legal practice is now concentrated in the areas of wills and estates and residential real estate. In the wills and estates areas, I have a wide practice from will and trust drafting to estate administration and filing of tax returns.
In the Wills area, I am able to assist with many more complex situations such as parents with disabled children, second marriages with separate families, primary and secondary Wills for those with corporate assets, international Wills, and many other out-of-the-ordinary situations.
Estate administration, often called probate, is becoming more and more complex as the government imposes more and more forms and procedures. I have a great deal of experience in dealing with more complex administrations such as those with no will or absent executors.
My real estate practice involves primarily residential purchases and sales and mortgage work. I have excellent staff who are very knowledgeable and friendly. Our goal is to make the experience of buying and selling as smooth and painless as possible while looking after all of the behind-the-scenes matters in order to ensure a timely closing.
